Since my time as an undergrad student, I have been keeping up with the events in the Middle East in regards to the Arab Spring. Initially I started out with a PSA advocating for the relocation of disadvantaged religious communities in Iraq fleeing persecution from groups such as ISIS from the perspective of a young woman in that situation. It had naturally evolved since then, taking on a life of its own.
So the first stage of that evolution was a Romeo and Juliet-esque tale set in Aleppo during the Syrian Civil War titled Thawra, or Revolution in Arabic. As the illustrator and script writer, I created the concepts below for the front cover. I took an approach that’s inspired from the illustrations that they have in Time and New Yorker magazines.
